Or why not join our pack walks and other events.  All the family welcome.

Pack walks:    Young dogs under a year - come and let them let off steam with their friends.  Fully supervised walk in secure locations starting at  2pm

Family Dogs and multi dog units:  You are most welcome to join us at 3.30pm.  As multi dog owners ourselves, we understand the dynamics of the pack - come and learn more or just have fun with your dogs.

Costs start from £17.50 per dog with discounts for block bookings or family units.  Bookings being taken now.

  • Worried about letting your dog off?
  • Afraid of how it will behave with other dogs?
  • Then ask for help now so you too can start enjoying walking with your dog in company.  We have ways to help.

Residential Training - Book your dogs place for our Easter course

Some dogs benefit from our residential training programme especially if they are of high energy or in their teenage years. We also recognise that many owners find it difficult to attend regular classes due to work and family commitments. This is an ideal solution. By leaving your dog with us at our training establishment, (http://www.spangleberry.co.uk ) you can be sure that your dog will have access to high quality training on a daily basis and be well looked after whilst staying within our kennels. Not only do they get trained, you also spend time with us learning how they behave and what to implement  when you take your dog home.  You are then welcome to join our group social skills sessions to help remind your dog how they should behave.   Call or email us for an information pack.

Going away and booked your dog into kennels already?

Why not ask us to call and train it while you are on holiday? - Easter bookings being taken now

All Day Workshop on 15th April

We are delighted to announce another of our very popular all day workshops on Thursday 15th April at our Alton venue.  Come and spend the day with us working on any problems that you are currently experiencing. A chance for you to concentrate on your dog without distractions - these sessions really help our dogs learn and you have fun too. An ideal place to remind your dog all that you have taught him/her and a chance for them to run off lead with our balanced pack members.

Book your place soon either through your trainer or the office.

Home Visits and 121 Help

We are always delighted to be able to help our clients and their dogs in their own home or local area.

Many puppies benefit from a home start visit, to help you start off as you wish to continue. Why not ask about our puppy package?

Read all the books and now not sure how to put it all into place?  Just rescued a dog?  Then our rescue remedy package is designed just for you.

Do you have a specific problem that you need help with?  Book a 121 session with one of our experienced trainers and they will show you how to overcome it.

Would you prefer to come along on your own the first time with your dog?  Then book a visit through the office.  Some breeds are better on their own and some owners feel happier - whichever way, you can be assured of a warm welcome.

Come Walkabout with us!!

Some of our members now have dogs that behave perfectly when attending the social groups but are still having problems whilst out walking. So we are arranging walks for members away from our centres, in areas we know, so that we can help you there.  If you are interested in our joining our group, please contact Carol to discuss the possibility. Costs will be just £17.50 and we plan to meet regularly in various areas. Our training dogs will also attend to help supervise the walk and numbers will be strictly limited.

We are also pleased to recommend Spangleberry Kennels in Worplesdon, Surrey where our dogs stay when we are visiting family in Australia.  Check out their website http://www.spangleberry.co.uk or call 01483 232330. Why not ask us to train your dog whilst they stay in kennels?

Social Groups and Rehabilitation Workshops (Click for more details)

Training Workshops - Why does my dog run off, have a go at other dogs, jump up - all these and much more explained to you and your family at our training workshops held in Farnham or Alton. We use our teaching dogs to help your dog learn how to cope and communicate with other dogs properly. We combine some socialisation and gentle obedience to allow your dog to relearn some of their canine manners.

Weekend Social Groups - We meet at two venues available at weekends. On Saturday mornings we meet in West Byfleet and on Sundays at our venue in Farnborough, why not call the office to find out if you can join us for an assessment - or check out our Socialisation Group web page.

Stress - Do Dogs suffer too?

Well at Walkabout, we have known that many cases of aggression are eventually sorted out by removing the stress that the dog is experiencing.  So perhaps now is the time to consider if this is one of the reasons that your dog is playing up. Although medical conditions should always be checked out by a Vet first, these are some of the signs to look out for: repeated ear infections or eyes weeping, not eating well; constant periods of diarrhoea or sickness; poor skin and coat; aggression over food or towards humans or other animals; constant barking or over reaction to the slightest noise; barking or even lunging at dogs/people as they go past.  Whilst some of these problems on their own are not really signs of stress,  if your dog shows signs of several of these symptoms, then we would suggest you need to work with us to help your dogs cope better.

We can illustrate coping with stress by telling you a short story.

Suppose you have a near “miss” in your car, just a near miss, but enough to shake you up.  Within 15 minutes, you will be feeling angry, going over in your mind what happened and how stupid the other driver was.  You cannot stop this – it is an automatic response by your body to the possible accident. When your body felt it was under threat, it set all sorts of survival instincts off to protect you.  So when your dog is getting the wrong messages from you and has to take over as pack leader, its body is reacting to a threat to its pack. If this continues then your dog is suffering – but how to explain to your dog that you have the situation under control?

Over the past 12 years, the team at Walkabout have been helping owners regain control over their dogs by giving them the tools to help their dogs.  We are holding workshops throughout the next month offering dogs and their owners a chance to learn these techniques.  If you would like to come along why not book your dogs place now.

PAST EVENTS

Walkabout Open Day

14th November from 9.30am            Photos by Cheesy Grins available now - see above.

Winter wonderland at Rushmoor Arena raising money for CURE LEUKAEMIA

Thank you to everyone that attended despite the awful weather and for being so generous.

Special thanks to Terena and Debbie who kept up a regular supply of hot food from the back of the horse box! And to Jane, Karis and Caroline for braving the terrible weather and organising the various events around the centre.

Our Dogathon attracted a loyal crowd and the winners this time were:

Obedience:      Wendy with Bella

Cross Country: Tracy with Callie

Agility:           Lesley with Finlay

We were also delighted to meet the Malamutes and see them racing and keeping fit, finding out more about this fascinating breed from their rescue stall and meet the dogs - all organised by Louise and her friends.  They were so kind to give up their spare time - we hope they managed to enjoy themselves, we know that the dogs did.

Lindsey from Simply Gorgeous! is Arctic Dog Sledging in Northern Sweden in aid of Cure Leukaemia.  We are delighted to confirm that she has met her target of £3250 and is off on Friday 12th February - look out for some photos soon.

Dogathon 2 - September 5th at Rushmoor Arena

Another glorious day made sure that everyone had a great time at our second Dogathon of the year.  Entrants were surprised at how easy it was to have fun with their dogs and yet still be competitive.  it was great to see so many people do so well and  the dogs behave impeccably, well done to all those who joined in.  We hope to see you all again at our final event later in the year provisional date 14th November at our Winter fundraising special.

The winners this event were:

Overall winner:  Tony with Holly the Boxer with Linda and Holly the GSD as runner up.

Social Skills was won by Laura with Phoebe, the chocolate Labrador

Cross Country was won by Linda with her GSD, Holly with Adam and Vicky winning the questions section with their dog Gemma.

Agility was won by Diana and  her magic dog, Bonnie.

As all these owners have had some challenges to meet with their dogs, it was wonderful to see their efforts so well rewarded.

Thank you to everyone who got involved and helped - we really couldn't have done it without you!

Thank you so much for the money raised at the Walkabout Fun Day. In dollars, the money you raised came to $1040, so a really good chunk towards building our clinic. On completion, we will be putting up a plaque in recognition of those who have helped to bring about such a great achievement - you can be sure that 'Walkabout' will be included.

Once again, many thanks for your help, it's very much appreciated.

Jen (Andy & Peanut Pet Shelter Board)

What a brilliant fun day and thank you for the tremendous support. Between us all we have raised over £650 for the peanut pet shelter.

This was our chance to fund raise for our charity based in Mexico.  The Peanut Pet Shelter is having a really rough time at the moment due to the "Swine Flu" epidemic. Many of the tourists are keeping away or being prevented from visiting and this means that nothing can get to the shelter.  They are desperate for medicines to prevent flea and tick infestations but the cost has risen so high that is almost impossible to help these young dogs. As a company we always try and run at least one fund raising event each year - so thanks for coming along to support us.

Here are the results:

Treasure Hunt:  Leah with Kiera, Linda with Holly and Julie and Keith with Twiggy and Timba

Then we decided to have a fun dog show:  Here are some of the winners with their prizes.

Best Veteran                                    Prettiest Bitch                                  Handsome Dog

Dog most like its owner?                    Waggiest Tail!!

Agility and a cake stall and the tombola and then a raffle all added to the sum raised. So special thanks to everyone involved, we know that Andy and Jennifer will be so pleased with the result.

The Walkabout Dogathon-1  2009

We all had great fun at the first Dogathon-1 on the 23rd May at the Rushmoor Arena and we were delighted to see so many old friends and their dogs come and take part.  We were blessed with kind weather and following the dressage/obedience test, there was a race around the centre to find all the treasure in the cross country. Then the show jumping—or rather the agility.  We had designed the course so that everyone could take part and enjoy their dogs and despite  keen competitiveness amongst some, it was the steady work by Neil and Tony that made sure of a lower penalty rate and resulting in overall winner and runner up position.  The winners of each section also were awarded with trophies to recognise their skill in each section.

Copies of the dvd of this event are now available from the office @ £6 per dvd. 50% proceeds going towards charity of the year - the cancer and bio detection dogs.

See http://www.cancerdogs.co.uk for more information.

Overall Winner Neil Aust with Elsa, is joined here by  Tony Mulcahy with Miska as overall runner up and also the winners of each of the sections.

In the centre are:

Helen Thomas with Bill who won the Dressage section

Alex Collins with Arnie who won the Agility section

James Vacher with Marley who won the Cross Country section

Well done to everyone who took part - see you next time.

Brook and Zytta love it but it is too deep for cars apart from 4x4's.

More Photos of the February snow here - why not send us yours?

We were delighted to see so many people attend our comic relief effort on Saturday at Rushmoor and well done to everyone who had a go on the agility. We hope to see you at our Sunday afternoon sessions very soon. Here are some photos of some of the dogs at the social session - the teenagers were definitely showing signs of "spring".

Congratulations to Julie with Pearl and Flyte for their success at Crufts 2009

Here are the Finchampstead class celebrating with Julie and Pearl- the Sealyham, (Flyte  has now come into season so wasn't there for this photo!) on their successes at Crufts this year. Debbie (in red) kindly made a chocolate cake for us all to enjoy to mark this special occasion. This friendly class will always welcome new members of all ages, so if interested, why don't you come along and join us on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm.

COCOA MULCH WARNING - PLEASE READ AND PASS THIS ON

I make no apology for copying this - we need to protect our dogs.

This message came to one of the groups from Ali Taylor, Head of Welfare, Battersea DH. They gave permission for it to be passed on.

Quote: Yesterday one of our dog agility friends experienced a tragedy and wanted me to pass a special message along to all of my dog loving friends and family. Please tell every dog owner you know.

Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden.  Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mum woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.   Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.   Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."

Also included was the following information -

 Quote:

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called "Theobromine". It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution, check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.   Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

PLEASE GIVE THIS THE WIDEST DISTRIBUTION!!!

Reminder - have you moved home recently - is your dogs id tag up to date?  Have you had your dog microchipped?  Then make sure you notify Pet Log now with your new address. Their number is 0870 - 6066751
