The Walkabout Way   -   Understanding Behaviour Course

Thank you for asking for further details of our training course, which is now available to anyone who is interested in learning more about their dogs and their behaviour. Over the six months, we can show you how and why our methods work and how you can begin to understand your dog and perhaps learn how to help others. Many of previous students have gone on to run their own schools whilst others have stayed with us and enjoy helping our clients at the social groups. Whichever way you would like to move forward, we can help.

There are 6 modules and a case study to complete. This will involve some research but mostly a lot of practical work. We believe that although there are very many good books on the subject, you cannot beat experience and we can offer you the opportunity to gain this whilst being supported by a professional team. Although there is no time limit, we suggest that you try and complete within 6 months. The course costs £996 and can be paid in 6 interest free instalments by standing order or by credit or debit card.     If you would like to become more involved and find out why and how our methods work then this is the course for you.

The modules to complete are:

ii.      How can we use food to control behaviour.

iii.      The problems facing the new owner bringing the new dog home – How to help them make the right decisions

iv.      The chance of the dog coming back into rescue – How to help prevent this

                                                             v.      Euthanasia?  When and why is this necessary and should it be considered.

  1. The Bitch v The Dog

                                                              i.      Apart from the obvious differences – what types of behaviour are there and what time of year should you expect these to show

ii.      The multi dog household – understanding the dynamics between bitch and dog when you have multiple dogs at home.

                                                             v.      Treats or toys – why and when to use these

iii.      How to assess a dog – what type of dog do we have?

                                                           iv.      When to move on

Case Study – (we suggest that this is started about half way through your course.)

Provide a case study for a dog from the initial enquiry through to attending club/groups and follow-ups with owner. We do not expect a perfect dog – just one that enjoys its life again with its owner. Include initial assessment and enquiry forms and diaries from the owner of improvements and also some of their dreadful days – we all get them. This study will be done whilst working with one of the senior instructors in the group so you will be getting help and support all the way through. In addition you will be invited to attend a 121 with either Stuart or Carol and provide an assessment afterwards of how we can help improve the dog’s life.

Additional Requirements for you to consider:

You would be expected to attend a min of 10 Saturday sessions and at least once at each of the other venues  Finchampstead, Alton and  Farnham.  You would be asked to assist trainers and help owners to practice exercises with their dogs so that you get plenty of practical experience.

You will have at least 6 practical tasks to complete during the year – one per module to allow you to get lots of practical experience during the course. You would have the opportunity to shadow Stuart and Carol for various days throughout the year – max of 5 days. This involves organising workshops, 121 visits or just assisting with the social walks and dog walking. These dates can be arranged with us to a mutual convenient time.

We would suggest that you attend the evening training club – Wednesday and help out. Learning how new owners deal and cope with puppy problems or rescue dogs will help you complete your modules. If you want to, you can learn how to take the class and how and when to intervene when things go wrong – as they always will.

All attendees would be required to sign a disclaimer, not to work within a specified mileage area of any Walkabout centres or do any private work using our name or qualifications unless this is previously agreed by Walkabout. However you have the opportunity to be invited to join our team at the end of the training period and after a further training period, you can talk to us about establishing your own business within the group (additional costs are involved).

If you are interested in joining our course and learning more, please complete the application form below, our disclaimer and if required the bankers order. You can send your application or hand it to us at one of our event.  Please include:

  • your completed application,

  • signed disclaimer and

  • payment

On receipt of this we will be contacting you to make arrangements for your course to start.
