Introducing the Teaching Dogs
Teaching dogs cannot be taught to do
this job, they have a natural skill and then using our experience, are
encouraged to supervise the dogs. These dogs all have an ability to help dogs
whatever the problem, even if it is to let off steam in a safe and secure
environment.
One thing they are not is aggressive
- they don't need to be as they are calm and confident in the knowledge that
they know what they are doing. This is backed up by their owners who are able to
read a situation and then help you learn and understand what is going on.
For example, unless the dog is a
young puppy under 3 months old, they are not playing, merely sorting out the
hierarchy within the group and their position in it. They are learning for the
future and practicing bite inhibition with each other. Then as they get
older, this develops into a "joust" for which bitch or dog they can choose. Our
teaching dogs, especially the "mums" know just how far to allow this to go and
when it should be stopped. Working within our groups we see all the
differing pack behaviours and are pleased to be able to share this with you.
Using no aggression, just calm and assertive presence, our team are here to
help.
Here are some of our team:
Ben
- 10 years of age and a wealth of experience in working with dogs of all ages.
He seems to know when to "split" a problem up and when the young dogs are just
sorting themselves out. His calm and assertive presence ensures that social
groups and "walkabouts" are as good as they can be, thus ensuring a
positive learning process.
Zytta
- nearly 10 years old and a veteran when it comes to dealing with the young
upstarts! Often it is only a look from the "duchess" that is sufficient
for a youngster to rethink his/her approach. Brilliant at puppy class -
she tests all the puppies treats to see if they are suitable - she also allows
them to jump on her and learn bite inhibition but as soon as they lose those
nasty sharp puppy teeth, then the teaching begins.
Brook-
was 10 in May and he is our body slammer. Thinks nothing of running off
with the pack of youngsters and allowing them to let off steam in a safe and
controlled manner. Brilliant with children of all ages, he is happiest as the
swimming club manager, working the pool and making sure that
no one goes home dry!
Katie
- was 10 in June but doesn't look it. Katie is our hunter of the pack,
she will teach any of the dogs how to hunt and play, providing that they behave.
But woe betide any dog that doesn't want to return to its owner, she has been
know to exclude dogs from the pack and their owner( it is amazing to watch how
body language can convince a dog to behave better) until the proper behaviour
convinces her that the dog can come back into the group. Funny enough, not many
dogs stray after that.
Sadly we have to report that we lost Katie at
the end of July 2010 - another of our team who will be greatly missed.
Tai
- our lead alpha dog who is also 10 - this is the one who does not need to
bark. A mere presence ensures that the youngsters behave. Having brought up two
litters from early days, he is a joy to watch with puppies but woe betide any
teenagers not showing him respect. Luckily enough most of them seem to know and
he now often is found relaxing in the car, his presence is usually enough. He
swims regularly to keep his back legs going.
Sad to report that Tai passed away at the start of July 2010 -
he will be greatly missed.
Kizzy-
now rising 9 and the mother of 2 beautiful litters who we have been pleased to
help. Kizzy is wonderful with the youngsters, using her knowledge of bringing up
the pups, to chastise and reprimand at just the right level to ensure a balanced
youngster. Currently working her magic on a very under-socialised puppy rescued
last September, and often seen as the teaching dog at the classes in
Finchampstead.
Abbi - our boxer princess - aged around
6 and mother of
two beautiful litters of boxers. She knows exactly what is needed with the young
upstarts in the boxer brigade.
Tealc - father of the two boxer litters - another of
our team who knows what to do and when.
As you can see most of our teachers are older, that is because they have the
experience to help. You will also often meet some of our other calm and balanced
dogs who are called upon to support the group. Ideally all dogs need balance to
ensure a long happy and healthy life and whilst not everyone wants a dog that
will go off and sort out other dog's problems, it is a privilege to share our
lives with these dogs.
We regularly hold workshops to assess dogs teaching abilities - why not
contact us to have your dog assessed if you feel it may have the qualities to
help or perhaps to understand why your dog does what it does.
