HELP FOR RESCUE DOGS

Rehoming a rescued dog can be a challenging but extremely rewarding experience for dog lovers, as many of the team at Walkabout can vouch - between us we have rescued numerous GSDs. We are also responsible for many dogs staying in their homes instead of being rescued - can we help you?

Often dogs that are taken in from rescue are a bit of an unknown quantity and we are proud to be able to assess these dogs, and offer advice to the new owners on how to help their new dog settle in.  Not sure whether your new dog will come back? Does it pull on a lead? What is it like around other dogs, puppies, cats etc we can help you find this out in a safe and secure environment and at all times advising which is the kindest way to help your new rescue settle in.

Being mistreated, or taken from/given up by the owners is very stressful for a dog and can damage their confidence in people severely, but in the right environment, with that special kind of love, understanding, and patience, that confidence and happiness can be restored. But there are lots of ways to do this - some dogs need lots of love - some lots of definite rules and some just need consistency and peace and quiet. What does your dog need?  Our teaching dogs can help - check out our social skills groups for more help and understanding.

When you see the progress that rescue dogs make after being rehomed, and the devotion that they pay to their new owners, and indeed the sense of achievement that those new owners feel, it is easy to see why people often take on rescue dogs again and again.

We are pleased to be able to help assess some of the long stay dogs and perhaps help them find their new home. Juliet was one on our recent success's - now happily working with her new handler in Leicestershire. Here she is with her new family - still with her lead on but it was her first day!

Here are  Xena and Ozzy with Dianne - sadly Dianne lost Ozzy suddenly in the summer and Xena who was fostered has now found a new permanent home. Dianne now has two new dogs Teddy and Yogi - both rescue dogs from Vigil GSD.

We are delighted to be able to support many rescue homes including:
